Our Beginning

Reef-magpie was established in 2012 after our founding team observed a consistent pattern: many capable, intelligent people struggled with basic financial concepts not because they lacked ability, but because no one had ever explained these things in practical terms.

Traditional financial education often assumes a baseline of knowledge that many adults simply were not taught. School curricula rarely cover budgeting, the mechanics of interest rates, or how superannuation actually works. This gap leaves people to figure things out through trial and error—often at significant cost.

We set out to bridge that gap with education that meets people where they are, using straightforward language and practical examples drawn from everyday Australian life.

What Guides Our Work

We believe that financial literacy should not be a privilege reserved for those with existing wealth or access to expensive advisers. Understanding how money works is a practical life skill that can benefit anyone, regardless of their current financial position.

Our approach centres on education rather than products. We do not sell financial products or receive commissions from financial institutions. This independence allows us to focus entirely on what might genuinely help each client, without conflicting interests.

Every person who comes to us has different circumstances, goals, and challenges. A young professional saving for their first home has different needs than a retiree managing their superannuation drawdown. Our services are designed to adapt to these varied situations rather than applying a standardised formula.

Our Team

Our educators come from diverse backgrounds in financial services, adult education, and community development. What unites them is a commitment to making complex concepts accessible and a genuine interest in helping people build confidence around money matters.

All team members undergo continuous professional development to stay current with changes in financial regulations, products, and educational best practices. We regularly review our materials and methods to ensure they remain relevant and effective.

Our Values

  • Clarity — We explain concepts in plain language, avoiding unnecessary jargon
  • Practicality — Our guidance focuses on actions people can actually take
  • Independence — We have no product affiliations that could bias our advice
  • Respect — We meet clients where they are without judgement

How We Work

Our process for delivering financial education

1

Initial Conversation

We begin with a discussion about your current situation and what you hope to achieve. This helps us understand which of our services might be most relevant for you.

2

Tailored Approach

Based on our conversation, we recommend specific workshops, consultations, or courses that align with your learning goals and current financial knowledge.

3

Practical Learning

Our sessions focus on applicable knowledge and skills. We use real scenarios and work through examples that relate to your actual financial situation.

4

Ongoing Support

After completing a service, you can return for follow-up sessions as questions arise or your circumstances change. Learning about money is an ongoing process.
